Caution to students of God's Word - Please remember two things when using our studies: #1. Our commentary is not God's Word. It is only our interpretation or understanding of "His Word" and even though we try our best to be accurate we may or may not be correct. #2. The King James translation, or any other translation, of the original Hebrew text has some words which were given different translations at different places probably because of the interpreters preconceived ideas of what they think God meant to say. For example: According to the notes in the "Drake's Annotated Reference Bible" the Hebrew word hayah in the KJV is Trans. (became) 67 times, (becamest or came to pass) 505 times, (become) 66 times, and (come to pass) 131 times, but for some reason in Genesis 1:2 it is translated (was)! That sure changes the way a person perceives the original creation of the earth, doesn't it? Gen. 1:2 And the earth was (became) without form, ... Without the leading by the Holy Spirit, there is no understanding of the truths, for all the truth of the Scriptures are revealed to us by God's Spirit.

The job of building the temple has fallen on Solomon, and there is much planning and materials that had to be amassed for the completion of the Temple. The first thing that Solomon did in his planning was to contact Hiram king of Tyre, a close friend to his father David, and contract with him for timbers, and cedar for the inner temple. The best cedars were in Lebanon, and because the men of Tyre were such good seamen, they even cut timbers for building their ships. Cedar is required for this part of the temple because cedar is a strong wood, and it has the scent that prevents insects damaging to wood. This is why we use cedar to store those things we desire to keep away from insects.

At the close of this fifth chapter, there will be a sketch of the temple as it would appear in Solomon's day. There will be other sketches demonstrating the temple activity, and those doing the construction. For a deeper study into the Temple constructed by king Solomon, one of the finest studies out is by E. Raymond Capt, of the Archaeological Institute of America. I Kings 5:1 "And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David."

I Kings 5:3 "Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the Lord his God for the ears which were about him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet."

I Kings 5:4 "But now the Lord my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent."

I Kings 5:5 "And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, `Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto My name.' "

I Kings 5:6 "Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians:"

I Kings 5:7 "And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, "Blessed be the Lord this day, Which hath given unto David a wise son over this great People." "

I King 5:8 "And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, "I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir."

I Kings 5:9 "My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt charge there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household."

I Kings 5:10 "So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees according to all his desire."

I Kings 5:11 "And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year."

I Kings 5:12 "And the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as He promised him: and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together."

I Kings 5:13 "And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel, and the levy was thirty thousand men."

These thousands of men that were part of the levy, were called to give free service. Their work is given in as free men willing to do a job, and not as a bond servant.

I Kings 5:14 "And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy."

I Kings 5:15 "And Solomon had threescore and then thousand that bare burdens, and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains:"

I Kings 5:16 "Beside the chief of Solomon's officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work."

I Kings 5:17 "And the king commanded, and they brought reat stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house."

I Kings 5:18 "And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house."

Those stonesquarers marks are still on the foundation stones of what is left of the temple today. The sixth chapter will discuss the Temple and parts of the structure, thus we within the next few pages are sketches of things that will be talked about in the next chapter.
