Pamphlet #4479
"Yeah man, those were the best fish sandwiches we have ever eaten! Got any more?" They obviously missed the lesson of the "bread of life". That's way too spiritual for them.
But Jesus, understanding what's on their minds, because they didn't "see" [understand] the miracle, still very patiently and lovingly teaches them to seek spiritual food, not physical.
Somehow they just don't seem too sincere.[27] Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.[28] Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
"Hmmm", they are thinking, "that doesn't sound too difficult! What sign can you give us that we may see and believe [read, "Can you make some more fish sandwiches"?]"[29] Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
You see, if you do the work of God, which is to believe on Him, then you will SEEK that true bread of life, the Word of God, and you will become a doer of it! So if you claim to "believe" and do not seek the Word of God daily [give us our daily bread], then you are a fish sandwich Christian [give us our daily fish sandwiches]. Remember, there are two fishes! One is real, the other is religion.
To study the Bible is the noblest of all pursuits;
to understand it, the highest of all goals.
We pray that with the guidance of the Holy
Spirit, you accomplish both.
is.
