Pamphlet #307
"The American Covenant"

The "American Covenant" started with the Apostle Paul's instruction
to head west with the Gospel news

Since the time of Samuel the prophet in 1120 B.C.

until the founding of this nation

the pagan idea of man and government had dominated the world scene.

We Christians have forgotten God's covenant,
with our Founding Fathers.

America from the days of its creation has been for God's glory
and for His people

and if His people will be willing to learn what He has done for them in the past,

repent,

and ask for God's forgiveness for forgetting
what He has done in bringing America into being,

God will deal with her enemies
within and without.

The beauty of American heritage is
that our Founders provided the third alternative;

a nation with true liberty and justice for all,

including both the believer
and the unbeliever.

The great founder of America's educational system,

Noah Webster, believed in the Christian philosophy of education.

Christian character development,

Biblical doctrine of salvation,

no forced taxation to support public schools,

and individual initiative and creativity.

In the twentieth century,

many unbelievers see no need
for the spiritual element whatsoever
since they see themselves as evolved animals
with no soul or eternal destiny.

God blessed America

because our forefathers built their nation
with reliance on Him and His Word,

and

because God had a Gospel purpose for our nation.

If we turn from His purpose we can expect judgment,

perhaps greater judgment than other nations because

"to whom much is given, much is required." (Luke 12:48)

If we abandon our
Biblical roots
for pluralism,

we will soon lose all the attending benefits
of Christian civilization,

such as law,

absolute moral standards,

a sound economy,

a limited government,

and any vintage of liberty that we still maintain.

Our founders would stand on another Lexington Green
if they were here today

and saw us submitting

to 40% confiscation of our property through government taxes,

the murder of 40 million babies through abortion
taking from them their lives and liberty,

and the State propagandizing the youth of our nation
in the religion of secular humanism
while forcing the Bible and prayer to be taken from our schools.

We are not truly free today.

Worse is coming

if we do not restore our Christian nation
through rebuilding
the character of the American Christian.

The proposition that
the Unites States of America
are a Christian and Protestant nation,

is not so much the assertion of a principle
as the statement of a fact.

That fact is not simply that the great majority of the people
are Christians and protestants,

but, that the organic life,

the institutions, laws, and official action of the government,
whether that action be legislative, judicial, or executive,

is,
and of right should be,
and in fact must be,
in accordance with the principle of Protestant Christianity.

When Protestant Christians came to this country they possessed and subdued the land.

They worshipped God,
and His Son Jesus Christ
as the Savior of the World,

and acknowledged the Scriptures
to be the rule of their faith and practice.

They introduced their religion into their families,
their schools,
and their colleges.

They set aside time to worship God.

They built churches,
erected school houses,

and taught their children to read the Bible
and to receive and obey it as the Word of God..

They formed themselves as Christians into municipal and state organizations.

They acknowledged God in their legislative assemblies.

They prescribed oaths to be taken in His name.

They closed their courts,
their places of  business,
their legislatures,
and all places under public control,
on the Lord's Day.

They declared Christianity to be part of the common law of the land.

In the process of time thousands have come among us,
who are neither Protestants nor Christians ...

All are welcomed;
all are admitted to equal rights and privileges.
All are allowed to acquire property,
and to vote in every election,
made eligible to all offices,
and invested with equal influence in all public affairs.

All are allowed to worship as they please,
or not to worship at all,
if they see fit.

No man is molested for his religion or his want of religion.
No man is required to profess any form of faith,
or to join any religious association.

More that this cannot
reasonably be demanded.

The infidel demands that the government should be conducted on the principle that Christianity is false.

The atheist demands that it should be conducted on the assumption that there is no God,

and the positivist on the principle that men are not free agents.

The sufficient answer to all this is that it cannot possibly be done.

The fact is, in the history of the human race,

America is the first country to recognize man's inalienable rights,

because of her covenant with God;

and on the day
America completely forgets her covenant with God
the decline will begin.

America
and all the World
will again revert back to the tyranny of the past
becoming slaves to a ruling secular elite.

George Washington said,

"By the miraculous care of Providence,
that  protected me beyond all human expectations,
I had four bullets through my coat,
and two horses shot out from under me,
and yet escaped unhurt."

He also later, as President said,

"It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God,
to obey His will,
to be grateful for His benefits,
and humbly to implore His protection and favor."

Until the Christian comes to grips with his historic duties,

denouncing his existential perspective and reaffirming the providential view of history,

the renewal of our nation will be impossible.

Is it coincidence that the weather forced
the Pilgrims on the Mayflower to land at Cape Cod,
where they were greeted by friendly indians,
instead of their destination, Virginia.

Was it coincidence that this is where Squanto,
the indian who spoke English, was living.

Is it coincidence that a fog moved in to hide Washington's army
as they retreated across the east river when they were penned up in Brooklyn Heights.

Although preached in all corners of the world, Rom. 1:8 and Col. 1:6,23  -
west of Jerusalem, the gospel has become the predominate cultural influence.

Since God instructed the Apostle Paul (Acts 16:9)
to take the Gospel west
divine providence has lead the movement of Christianity

first across Europe,

then jumping the Ocean to the founding of America,

and now across another ocean to Japan Korea and southeast Asia..

Today, most of us take for granted such things as our individual liberty:

the right to make what we wish of our lives;
to choose a profession;
to live and work where we wish;
to pursue happiness in our own way and enjoy the fruits of our labors;
to own our homes and put money into savings accounts
or investments in businesses that provide goods or services of benefit to everyone;

and above all,

the right to worship God according to the dictates of our conscience.

But, we have forgotten that liberty was not always alive and well in the world.

In fact, liberty is a relatively new experience for mankind.

Real liberty for individuals only began with Christianity,

and it was the full flowering of Christian principles in America
that made liberty happen here to an unprecedented degree.

Only the providential view of history which guided the Pilgrims,

can give the individual hope
that an all-powerful God
can open doors that men have closed,

can use the individual to accomplish great things.

When we see ourselves as God sees us,

as His sub-regents (Rev. 1:6)

and Dominion men and women (Gen. 1:26,28),

we become God's world changers.

Liberty was won for us
through the sacrifice of thousands of self-governing individuals
over hundreds of years.

Before we allow it to slip through our grasp,

we should pause and consider the following words.

Men,
in a word,
must necessarily be controlled either by a power within them,
or by a power without them;

either by the word of God,
or by the strong arm of man,

either by the Bible,
or by the bayonet.
