[*] Years
of wandering: [1] rules for Israel on entering Canaan
[*] The wilderness was part
of the necessary discipline of our ancestors as a redeemed people, but
not the years of wandering. The latter were due wholly to the unbelief
of our ancestors at Kadesh-barnea. The Red Sea, Marah, Elim, and Sinai
were God's ways in development and discipline and have, of necessity, their
counterpart in Christian experience:
(1) the Red Sea suggests the cross
as that which (death to Christ but life for us) seperates us from Egypt,
the world (Gal.6:14);
Galatians
6:14 But God forbid that I should glory,
save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified
unto me, and I unto the world.
(2) Marah, God's power to turn
vexatious things into blessings;
(3) Elim, God's power to give rest
and refreshment along the way;
(4) Sinai, God's holiness and our
deep inherent evil, the experience of Rom.7:7-25.
Romans
7:7 ¶What shall we say then? Is
the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for
I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 8
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment,
wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was
dead. 9 For
I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived,
and I died. 10
And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto
death.
11
For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by
it slew me. 12 Wherefore
the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13
Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin,
that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that
sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. 14
¶For we know that the law is spiritual:
but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15
For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not;
but what I hate, that do I. 16
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that
it is good. 17
Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 For
I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to
will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For
the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I
do. 20 Now
if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth
in me. 21 I
find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22
For I delight in the law of God after
the inward man:
23
But I see another law in my members,
warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the
law of sin which is in my members. 24
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this
death? 25 I
thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself
serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
So far the path was and is God.
But from Kadesh-barnea to Jordan all (except the grace of God toward an
unbelieving people) is for warning, not imitation (1 Cor.10:1-11; Heb.3:17-19).

Corinthians 10:1 ¶Moreover, brethren,
I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under
the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3
And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
4 And did
all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock
that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 5
But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown
in the wilderness. 6 ¶Now
these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after
evil things, as they also lusted. 7
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written,
The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8
Neither let us commit fornication, as
some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
9 Neither
let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of
serpents. 10 Neither
murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
11 Now
all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written
for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Hebrews
3:17 But with whom was he grieved forty
years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the
wilderness? 18
And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but
to them that believed not? 19 So
we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
There is a present rest of God,
of which the Sabbath and Canaan were types, into which believers may and,
therefore, should enter by faith (Heb.3:4).
Hebrews
3:4 For every house is builded by some
man; but he that built all things is God.
Numbers
15:1 ¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, [*]
When ye be come
into the land of your habitations, which I give unto you,
[*] It is remarkable that
when our ancestors were turning in unbelief from the land, God gave them
directions for conduct when they have shall have entered it. Cp.Rom.11:29;
Phil.1:6.
Romans
11:29 For the gifts and calling of God
are without repentance.
Philemon
1:16 Not now as a servant, but above
a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee,
both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
Numbers
15:3 And will make an offering by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering,
or a sacrifice in performing a vow, or in a freewill offering, or in your
solemn feasts, to make a sweet savour unto the LORD, of the herd, or of
the flock:
4
Then shall he that offereth his offering unto the LORD bring a meat offering
of a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of oil.
5
And the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering shalt thou prepare
with the burnt offering or sacrifice, for one lamb.
6
Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meat offering two tenth deals of
flour mingled with the third part of an hin of oil.
7
And for a drink offering thou shalt offer the third part of an hin of wine,
for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
8
And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt offering, or for a sacrifice
in performing a vow, or peace offerings unto the LORD:
9
Then shall he bring with a bullock a meat offering of three tenth deals
of flour mingled with half an hin of oil.
10
And thou shalt bring for a drink offering half an hin of wine, for an offering
made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
11
Thus shall it be done for one bullock, or for one ram, or for a lamb, or
a kid.
12
According to the number that ye shall prepare, so shall ye do to every
one according to their number.
13
All that are born of the country shall do these things after this manner,
in offering an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
Law of the stranger sojourning in the land (v.14-16)
Numbers
15:14 And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever be among you
in your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet
savour unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do.
15
One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the
stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance for ever in your generations:
as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD.
16
One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth
with you.
17
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
18
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into
the land whither I bring you,
19
Then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall
offer up an heave offering unto the LORD.
20
Ye shall offer up a cake of the first of your dough for an heave offering:
as ye do the heave offering of the threshingfloor, so shall ye heave it.
21
Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the LORD an heave offering
in your generations.
22
¶And if ye have erred, and not observed all these commandments, which
the LORD hath spoken unto Moses,
23
Even all that the LORD hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the
day that the LORD commanded Moses, and henceforward among your generations;
24
Then it shall be, if ought be committed by ignorance without the knowledge
of the congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one young bullock
for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour unto the LORD, with his meat offering,
and his drink offering, according to the manner, and one kid of the goats
for a sin offering.
25
And the priest shall make an atonement for all the congregation of the
children of Israel, and it shall be forgiven them; for it is ignorance:
and they shall bring their offering, a sacrifice made by fire unto the
LORD, and their sin offering before the LORD, for their ignorance:
26
And it shall be forgiven all the congregation of the children of Israel,
and the stranger that sojourneth among them; seeing all the people were
in ignorance.
27
And if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she goat of
the first year for a sin offering.
28
And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly,
when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an atonement for
him; and it shall be forgiven him.
29
Ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through ignorance, both for
him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that
sojourneth among them.
30
¶But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born
in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul
shall be cut off from among his people.
31
Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment,
that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.
The law's condemnation (Rom.3:19;
7:7-11; 2 Cor.3:7,9; Gal.3:10)
Romans
3:19 ¶Now we know that what things
soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every
mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Romans
7:7 ¶What shall we say then? Is
the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for
I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 8
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of
concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. 9
For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin
revived, and I died. 10
And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11
For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew
me.
2
Corinthians 3:7 But if the ministration
of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children
of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of
his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
2
Corinthians 3:9 For if the ministration
of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness
exceed in glory.
Galatians
3:10 For as many as are of the works
of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one
that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the
law to do them.
Numbers 15 continued
Numbers
15:32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they
found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.
33
And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron,
and unto all the congregation.
34
And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done
to him.
35
And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all
the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.
36
And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with
stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.
The border of blue---reminder of seperated walk Ex.13:1-10
Exodus
13:1 ¶And the LORD spake unto Moses,
saying, 2 Sanctify
unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children
of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. 3
And Moses said unto the people, Remember
this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage;
for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there
shall no leavened bread be eaten. 4
This day came ye out in the month Abib. 5
And it shall be when the LORD shall
bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites,
and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to
give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this
service in this month. 6
Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day
shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened
bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen
with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
8 And thou
shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which
the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt. 9
And it shall be for a sign unto thee
upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD'S
law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee
out of Egypt. 10
Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year
to year.
Numbers
15:37 ¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
38
Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes
in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that
they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:
39
And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember
all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after
your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:
40
That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your
God.
41
I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to
be your God: I am the LORD your God.
History shows that the northern 10 tribes migrated north over the Caucasus Mountains (hence called Caucasians) and became known as the Cimmerians, the Celts, the Saxons ('Saac's sons), etc., and settled in western Europe, the British isles, and later many migrated to the Americas.
