Exodus
Chapter
18
Visit of Jethro, Moses' father-in-law
Exodus
18:1 [*]
¶When
Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law,
heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and
that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;
[*] When many people read
Judges 1:16 they think, albeit in error, that Jethro, Moses' father-in-law
was a Kenite, a descendant of Cain,
Judges
1:16 And the children
of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went
up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness
of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among
the people.
but that is not the case. It only
appears to be so, if all they read is this verse, but Num.10:29 and Gen.25:1-2
prove otherwise.
Numbers
10:29 ¶And Moses said unto Hobab,
the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father
in law, We are journeying unto the place of
which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will
do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel. and
Genesis
25:1
¶Then again Abraham took a wife,
and her name was Keturah. 2
And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian,
and Ishbak, and Shuah.
You see, Numbers 10:29 tells us
Jephro was a Midianite by birth and Genesis 25:1-2 tell us Midian was a
descendant of Abraham by birth. Judges 1:16 is only telling us that Jephro
was living amongst the Kenites; therefore, could be called a Kenite even
though not a descendant of Cain.
For example: If you live and were
born in Pennsylvania you are a Pennsylvanian. If you now live in Pennsylvania,
but were born in Ohio, you can still be correctly called a Pennsylvanian.
Exodus 18 continued
Exodus
18:2 Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife,
after he had sent her back,
3
And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said,
I have been an alien in a strange land:
4
And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he,
was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:
5
And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto
Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:
6
And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and
thy wife, and her two sons with her.
Moses relates to Jethro the miracles
of God
Exodus
18:7 ¶And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did
obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare;
and they came into the tent.
8
And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh
and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come
upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
Jethro worships God and feasts with
elders of Israel
Exodus
18:9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had
done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
10
And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the
hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered
the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
11
Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein
they dealt proudly he was above them.
12
And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices
for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with
Moses' father in law before God.
Long court sessions
Exodus
18:13 ¶And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to
judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the
evening.
Jethro advocates three changes:
[1] Moses to save his strength
(Num.11:17)
Numbers
11:17 And I will come down and talk
with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and
will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with
thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
Exodus
18:14 And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people,
he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest
thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto
even?
15
And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me
to enquire of God:
16
When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and
another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
17
And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not
good.
18
Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee:
for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself
alone.
[2] Universal teaching and knowledge
of the law
Exodus
18:19 Hearken
now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee:
Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto
God:
20
And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the
way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
[3] Establishment of lower and
higher courts (Dt.16:18; 17:8)
Deuteronomy
16:18 ¶Judges and officers shalt
thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout
thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.
Deuteronomy
17:8 ¶If there arise a matter too
hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea,
and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy
gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the
LORD thy God shall choose;
Exodus
18:21[*]
Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear
God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be
rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers
of tens:

Exodus
18:22 And let them judge the people
at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring
unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier
for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23
If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be
able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
Moses obeys Jethro (Num.11:10-25)
Numbers
11:10 Then Moses heard the people weep
throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger
of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased. 11
And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant?
and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the
burden of all this people upon me? 12
Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest
say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking
child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
13
Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep
unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat. 14
I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for
me. 15
And if
thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found
favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness. 16
¶And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders
of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers
over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that
they may stand there with thee. 17
And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit
which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the
burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone. 18
And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and
ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who
shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore
the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. 19
Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days,
nor wenty days; 20
But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome
unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and
have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt? 21
And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen;
and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.
22 Shall
the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all
the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them? 23
And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt
see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not. 24
¶And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and
gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round
about the tabernacle. 25
And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the
spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came
to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did
not cease.
Exodus
18:24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did
all that he had said.
25
And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the
people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and
rulers of tens.
26
And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought
unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
27
And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own
land.
History shows that the northern 10 tribes migrated north over the Caucasus Mountains (hence called Caucasians) and became known as the Cimmerians, the Celts, the Saxons ('Saac's sons), etc., and settled in western Europe, the British isles, and later many migrated to the Americas.
