"HOW TO HEAR GOD"

  * The Holy Spirit lives in you.

The Holy Spirit lives in you, wanting to guide you.
You, however, if you belong to Christ,
are controlled not by the sinful nature,
but by the Spirit.

If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,
he does not belong to Christ (Rom. 8:9).

  * The Holy Spirit leads you.

If you live according to the sinful nature, you will die;
but those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God (Rom. 8:13-14).

  * The Holy Spirit represents you.

Just as He knows the mind of God,
the Spirit knows your mind and clearly expresses your thoughts to God.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we ought to pray for,
but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit,
because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will (Rom. 8:26-27).

  * The Holy Spirit strengthens you.

I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you
with power through His Spirit in your inner being (Eph. 3: 16-17).

  * The Holy Spirit speaks to you.

Train yourself to hear God by learning the principle God taught to Joshua.
Do not let this Book of the Law [Scripture] depart from your mouth;
meditate on it day and night,
so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.
Then you will be prosperous and successful (Joshua 1:8).

   Learning to hear:

This pattern for hearing God is outlined in Psalm 119.

1 Love the Law of God. Loving God makes it easy to love the law He made.
Those who don't know His Word don't know Him or what He wants.

2 Obey it with rejoicing. Halfhearted or reluctant obedience cannot lead to spiritual sensitivity.
You can't hear God clearly unless you want to hear Him.
Any selfishness, private agendas, or prejudices that deter your spiritual surrender
keep you from hearing the Spirit.

3 Hide it in your heart.
Memorizing the Word makes it available for study or meditation anytime, anywhere.

4 Understand what it means. Misunderstood Scripture or misapplied Scripture
makes you a slave to ignorance.

5 Meditate on the Word and on the ways of God. Those too busy to meditate on God,
His Word, or His ways are too busy to hear the Spirit when He speaks.
They can't identify His voice within the jumble of noise permeating their fast-paced, hectic lives.
Meditation tunes out that excess, useless noise, and attunes you to Him.

6 Reach a level of wisdom and deep understanding. You will reach a state of spirituality,
wisdom, and understanding to give you confidence in your ability to recognize God's direction.
You will know when you're headed in the right direction - and when you aren't.
You will learn to trust your thoughts, knowing which are ungodly and which are godly.

The Spirit will guide your life.
