The Mosaic Covenant
Exodus
19:1 ¶In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone
forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness
of Sinai.
2
For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai,
and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.

The Mosaic Covenant proposed
3
And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain,
saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children
of Israel;
4
Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles'
wings, and brought you unto myself.
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12 ¶Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. 18 ¶And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. 22 ¶And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. 24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. 25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. 26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

Exodus
31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he
had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony,
tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
These three elements form "the law,"
as that expression is generally used in the N.T. (e.g.Mt.5:17,18).
Matthew
5:17 ¶Think not that I am come
to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle
shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
The commandments and the ordinances
formed one religious system. The commandments were a "ministry of condemnation"
and "of death" (2 Cor.3:7-9);
2
Corinthians 3:7 But if the ministration
of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children
of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of
his countenance; which glory was to be done away: 8
How
shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? 9
For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration
of righteousness exceed in glory.
the ordinances gave, in the high
priest, a representative of the people with the Lord; and in the sacrifices
a cover for their sins in anticipation of the Cross (Heb.5:1-3; 9:6-9;
cp.Rom.3:25-26). (see Atonement, Lev.16:6,
below)
Hebrews
5:1 ¶For every high priest taken
from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he
may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: 2
Who
can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way;
for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. 3
And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself,
to offer for sins.
Hebrews
9:6 Now when these things were thus
ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing
the service of God. 7
But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without
blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
8
¶The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of
all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
9
Which
was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts
and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as
pertaining to the conscience;
Romans
3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for
the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26
To
declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just,
and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
The Christian is not under the conditional
Mosaic Covenant of works, i.e.the law, but under the unconditional New
Covenant of grace (Rom.3:21-27; 6:14-15; Gal.2:16; 3:10-14,16-18,24-26;
4:21-31; Heb.10:11-17).
Romans
3:21 But now the righteousness of God
without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all
and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24
Being
justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus: 25
Whom
God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to
declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through
the forbearance of God; 26
To
declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just,
and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but
by the law of faith.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 4:21 ¶Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? 22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. 24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. 27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. 28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. 29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. 30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
Hebrews 10:11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
The law did not change the provision
of the Abrahamic Covenant but was an added thing for a limited time only---till
the Seed should come (Gal.3:17-19).
Galatians
3:17 And this I say, that the covenant,
that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred
and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise
of none effect. 18
For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God
gave it to Abraham by promise. 19
¶Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions,
till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained
by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Atonement. The Biblical use and
meaning of the word must be sharply distinguished from its use in theology.
In theology it is a term which covers the whole sacrifical and redemptive
work of Christ. In the O.T., atonement is the English word used to translate
the Hebrew words which mean cover, coverings, or to cover. Atonement
is, therefore, not a translation of the Hebrew but a purely theological
concept. The Levitical offerings "covered" the sins of Israel until and
in anticipation of the cross, but did not "take away" (Heb.10:4) those
sins.
Hebrews
10:4 For it is not possible that the
blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
These were the sins done in O.T.
times ("covered" meantime by the Levitical sacrifices). which God "passed
over" (Rom.3:25),
Romans
3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for
the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
for which passing over God's rightousness
was never vindicated until, in the cross, Jesus Christ was "set forth a
propitiation." See Propitiation,
Rom.3:25, note below.
It was the cross, not the Levitical
sacrifices, which made full and complete redemption. The O.T. sacrifices
enabled God to go on with a guilty people because those sacrifices typified
the cross. To the offerer they were the confession of his desert of death
and the expression of his faith; to God they were the "shadows" of good
things that were to come, of which Christ was the reality (cp.Heb.10:1).
Hebrews
10:1 ¶For the law having a shadow
of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never
with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make
the comers thereunto perfect.
The O.T. sacrifices only covered
sin, never removing it.
The mercy seat was sprinkled with
atoning blood on the day of Atonement representing that the righteous sentence
of the law had been executed, changing a judgment seat into a mercy seat
(Heb.9:11-15).
Hebrews
9:11 But Christ being come an high priest
of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made
with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12
Neither
by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once
into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
13
For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling
the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14
How
much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve
the living God? 15
¶And
for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of
death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first
testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
cp. "throne of grace," Heb.4:14-16.
Hebrews
4:14 Seeing then that we have a great
high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let
us hold fast our profession. 15
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling
of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without
sin. 16
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain
mercy, and find grace to help in time of need
Hebrews
8:1 ¶Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum:
We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne
of the Majesty in the heavens;
2
A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord
pitched, and not man.
3
For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore
it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.
4
For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are
priests that offer gifts according to the law:
5
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was
admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith
he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in
the mount.
6
¶But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also
he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better
promises.
The New Covenant
7
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have
been sought for the second.
Hebrews
8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come,
saith the Lord, [*] when
I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house
of Judah:
Scofield's commentary concerning The New Covenant
[1] "better"
than the Mosaic Covenant (Ex.19:5)
Exodus
19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey
my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, (see
comentary above)
then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all
the earth is mine:
not morally but efficaciously (Heb.7:19;
cp. Rom.8:3-4).
Hebrews
7:19 For the law made nothing perfect,
but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto
God.
Romans
8:3 For what the law could not do, in
that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness
of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4
That
the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after
the flesh, but after the Spirit.
[2] It is established upon "better" (i.e. unconditional) promises.
In the Mosaic Covenant God said,
"If ye will" "Ex.19:5);
Exodus
19:5 Now therefore,
if ye will obey
my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, (see
comentary above)then
ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth
is mine:
in the New Covenant He says, "I
will" (Heb.8:10,12).
Hebrews
8:10 For this is the covenant that I
will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I
will put my laws into their mind, and
write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall
be to me a people:
Hebrews
8:12 For I
will be merciful to their unrighteousness,
and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
[3]
Under the Mosaic Covenant obedience sprang from fear (Heb.2:2; 12:25-27);
Hebrews
2:2 For if the word spoken by angels
was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just
recompence of reward;
Hebrews
12:25 See that ye refuse not him that
speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth,
much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from
heaven: 26
Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet
once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. 27
And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that
are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot
be shaken may remain.
under the New Covenant it issues
from a willing heart and mind (Heb.8:10).
Hebrews
8:10 For this is the covenant that I
will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I
will put my laws into their mind, and
write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall
be to me a people:
[4]
The New Covenant secures the personal revelation of the Lord to believer
(Heb.8:11).
Hebrews
8:11 And they shall not teach every
man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for
all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
[5]
It assures the complete oblivion of sins (Heb.8:12; 10:17; cp.10:1-:3).
Hebrews
8:12 For I
will be merciful to their unrighteousness,
and their sins and their iniquities will
I remember no more.
Hebrews
10:17 And
their sins and iniquities will I remember
no more.
cp.Hebrews
10:1
¶For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very
image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered
year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2
For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers
once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3
But
in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
[6] It
rests upon an accomplished redemption (Mt.26:27-28; 1 Cor.11:25; Heb.9:11-12,18-23).
Matthew
26:27 And he took the cup, and gave
thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28
For
this is my blood of the new testament(covenant),
which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
1
Corinthians 11:25 After the same manner
also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the
new testament (covenant)
in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
Hebrews
9:11 But Christ being come an high priest
of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made
with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered
in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews
9:18 Whereupon neither the first testament
was dedicated without blood.
19
For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to
the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet
wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20
Saying, This is the blood of the testament(covenant)
which God hath enjoined unto you. 21
Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels
of the ministry. 22
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding
of blood is no remission. 23
¶It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens
should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with
better sacrifices than these.

36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. 37 Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD. 38 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner. 39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath. 40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.

I. Dominiom over all the Earth before the Call of Abraham.
[1] Dominioun
over creation was given to the first man and woman (Gen.1:26-28),
Genesis
1:26 ¶And God said, Let us make
man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the
fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and
over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the
earth. 27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him;
male and female created he them. 28
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply,
and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish
of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that
moveth upon the earth.
Through the fall this dominion was
lost, Satan becoming "prince of this world" (Mt.4:8-10; Jn.14:28-31).
Matthew
4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into
an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world,
and the glory of them; 9
And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall
down and worship me. 10
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou
shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
John
14:28 ¶Ye have heard how I said
unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would
rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater
than I. 29 And
now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass,
ye might believe. 30
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh,
and hath nothing in me. 31 But
that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave
me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

with Isa,43:10-12;
[2] to
illustrate to the nations the blessedness of serving the true God (Dt.33:26-29;
1 Chr.17:20-21; Ps.144:15);
[3] to
receive, preserve, and transmit the Scriptures (Dt.4:5-8; Rom.3:1-2);
and [4] to be the human channel
for the Messiah (Gen.3:15; 12:3; 22:18; 28:10-14; 49;10; 2 Sam.7:12-16;Isa.7:14;
9:6; Mt.1:1; Rom.1:3).
According to the prophets, Israel,
regathered from all the nations, restored to her own land and converted,
is yet to have her greatest earthly exaltation and glory.
(see kingdom O.T. above & N.T. below &
Davidic Covenant, below)
Among these purposes is the establishment of a world-wide kingdom. The history of the divine mediatorial rule in Israel is as follows:
[1] Its establishment under Moses (Ex.19:3-7;
cp. Ex.3:1-10; 24:12)
Exodus
19:3 And Moses went up unto God, and
the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say
to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; 4
Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles'
wings, and brought you unto myself. 5
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then
ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth
is mine: 6
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These
are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
7
And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before
their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.
cp. Exodus 3:1 ¶Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
7 ¶And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
Exodus 24:12 ¶And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.
[2] Its administration under leader-judges
(Josh.1:1-5; Jud.2:16-18).
Joshua
1:1 ¶Now after the death of Moses
the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua
the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying, 2
Moses
my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and
all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children
of Israel. 3
Every
place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto
you, as I said unto Moses. 4
From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river
Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward
the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. 5
There
shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life:
as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
Judges
2:16 Nevertheless the LORD raised up
judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.
17
And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring
after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out
of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the
LORD; but they did not so. 18
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge,
and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the
judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of
them that oppressed them and vexed them.
[3] Its adminstration under kings (1 Sam.10:1,24;
16:1-13; 1 Ki.9:1-5).
1
Samuel 10:1 ¶Then Samuel took a
vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is
it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
1
Samuel 10:24 And Samuel said to all
the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like
him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save
the king.
1 Samuel 16:1 ¶And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. 2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD. 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. 4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? 5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 ¶And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him. 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
1 Kings 9:1 ¶And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of the LORD, and the king's house, and all Solomon's desire which he was pleased to do, 2 That the LORD appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared unto him at Gibeon. 3 And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. 4 And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments: 5 Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.
[4] Its end at the captivity (Ezek.21:25-27; cp, Jer.27:6-8).
Ezekiel 21:25 And thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end,
26
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the
crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him
that is high.
27 I will
overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he
come whose right it is; and I will give it him.
cp,Jeremiah
27:6 And now have I given all these
lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant;
and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him. 7
And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son's son, until
the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall
serve themselves of him. 8 And
it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve
the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their
neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish,
saith the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence,
until I have consumed them by his hand.
The shame is that, for the most part, our entire 20th.and 21st. century Christian Church has fallen into this trap.
Therefore, they now believe that when the remaining two tribes, i.e. "The House of Judah", were taken away by Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, they comprised the entire Israelite peoples.
Now, they call, all the people they believe are, Israelites Jews and have completely ignored the fact that the rest of us, who have become the Christian nations in both Europe and the Americas are indeed Israelites.
Read Rev. 2:9 and 3:9 very carefully,
for Christ is refering to us 21st century Christians.
Revelation
2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation,
and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of themwhich
say they are Jews, and are not, but
are the synagogue of Satan.
Revelation
3:9 Behold, I will make them of the
synagogue of Satan, which say they are
Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold,
I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that
I have loved thee.
2 Kings 17:6
In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried
Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the
river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
2 Kings 18:9
¶And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was
the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser
king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. 10
And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah,
that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11
And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them
in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:
Hosea 2:6 says, "...I will hedge up they way with thorns, and make a wall that she shall not find her paths." In this wasn't God was making it clear that the Israelites were not to return to Palestine?
Read all of Hosea 1 &
2. Pamphlets #8061
and #8062.
In fact read all of Hosea,
Joel, and Amos to learn just how far we Christians are being lead astray.
[*] The Davidic Covenant,
verses 8-16) upon which the future kingdom of Christ, "of the seed of David
according to the flesh" (Rom.1:3)
Romans
1:1 ¶Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ,
called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2
(Which
he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of
David according to the flesh;
was to be founded, provided for
David:
(1) the
promise of posterity in thre Davidic house;
(2) a
throne symbolic of royal auyhority;
(3) a
kingdom, or rule on earth;
and (4)
certainty of fulfillment, for the pormises to David "shall be established
forever."
Solomon, whose birth God predicted
(v.12), was not promised a perpetual seed, but only assured that
(1) he
would build "an house for my name" (v.13);
(2) his
kingdom would established (v.12);
(3) his
throne, i.e. royal authority, would endure forever;
and (4)
if Solomon sinned, he would be chastised but not deposed.
The continuance of Solomon's throne,
but not Solomon's seed, shows the accuracy of the prediction. Israel had
nine dtnasties; Judah had one. Christ was born of Mary, who was not of
Solomon's line (Jer.22:28-30);
Jeremiah
22:28 Is this man Coniah a despised
broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they
cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?
29
O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD. 30
Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not
prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon
the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
He was a descendant of Nathan, another
son of David (cp. Lk.3:23-31),
Luke
3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about
thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was
the son of Heli, 24
Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the
son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,
25
Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the
son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,
26
Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was
the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,
27
Which
was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of
Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri, 28
Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was
the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,
29
Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the
son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi,
30
Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son
of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim, 31
Which
was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of
Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,
Joseph, the husband of Mary, was
descended from Soloman and not through him the throne legally passed to
Christ (cp. Mt.1:6,16).
Matthew
1:6 And Jesse begat David the king;
and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
Matthew
1:16
And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of
Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Thus the throne, but not the seed, came through Solomon, which is precise fulfillment of the Lord's promise to David.
In contrast with the irrevocable
promise of perpetual fulfillment made to David, Solomon illustrates the
conditional character of the Davidic Covenant as applied to the kings who
followed him. Disobedience on the part of David's descendants would result
in chastisement, but not in annulment of covenant (2 Sam.7:15; Ps.89:20-37;
Isa.54:3,8,10)
2
Samuel 7:15 But my mercy shall not depart
away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
Psalms
89:20 I have found David my servant;
with my holy oil have I anointed him: 21
With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen
him. 22
The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
23
And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate
him.
24
But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall
his horn be exalted. 25
I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
26
He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
27
Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
28
My
mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast
with him. 29
His
seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of
heaven. 30
If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; 31
If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; 32
Then
will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with
stripes. 33
Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer
my faithfulness to fail. 34
My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my
lips.
35
Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. 36
His
seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. 37
It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness
in heaven. Selah.
Isaiah
54:3 For thou shalt break forth on the
right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and
make the desolate cities to be inhabited
Isaiah
54:8 In a little wrath I hid my face
from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy
on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.
Isaiah
54:10 For the mountains shall depart,
and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither
shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy
on thee.
So chastisement fell, first in the
division of the kingdom under Rehoboam, and the captivities (2 Ki.25:1-21).
2
Kings 25:1 ¶And it came to pass
in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of
the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host,
against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against
it round about. 2
And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. 3
And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city,
and there was no bread for the people of the land. 4
And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the
way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king's garden: (now
the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the
way toward the plain. 5
And the army of the Chaldees pursued after the king, and overtook him in
the plains of Jericho: and all his army were scattered from him.
6 So they took the king, and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment upon him. 7 And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon. 8 ¶And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem: 9 And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man's house burnt he with fire. 10 And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.
11 Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon, with the remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carry away. 12 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen. 13 And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD, did the Chaldees break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon. 14 And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away. 15 And the firepans, and the bowls, and such things as were of gold, in gold, and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away.
16
The
two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made for the house
of the LORD; the brass of all these vessels was without weight. 17
The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the chapiter upon
it was brass: and the height of the chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen
work, and pomegranates upon the chapiter round about, all of brass: and
like unto these had the second pillar with wreathen work. 18
And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah
the second priest, and the three keepers of the door: 19
And
out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and
five men of them that were in the king's presence, which were found in
the city, and the principal scribe of the host, which mustered the people
of the land, and threescore men of the people of the land that were found
in the city: 20
And Nebuzaradan captain of the guard took these, and brought them to the
king of Babylon to Riblah: 21
And the king of Babylon smote them, and slew them at Riblah in the land
of Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.
Read about it again in 2
Kings 18:9-13

Kings 18:9 ¶And it came to pass
in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea
son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against
Samaria, and besieged it. 10
And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah,
that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.
11 And the king of Assyria did carry
away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river
of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes: 12
Because
they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant,
and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear
them, nor do them. 13
Now
in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria
come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.
Only now, in v.13 we learn
that he also took the fenced cities of Judah. If we keep reading in
2 Kings 19:4
2
Kings 19:4 It may be the LORD thy God
will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master
hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which
the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that are left
we learn that there was only
a remnant of "The House of Judah" were left.. And in 2 Kings 19:30
2
Kings 19:30 And the remnant that is
escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear
fruit upward. 31
For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out
of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
We find that it was only
with the Lord's help that even the remnant was able to escape. We haven't
even gotten to the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar
the king of Babylon yet. That
don't happen until 586BC, 135 years after the House of Israel and the bulk
of the House of Judah were captured and removed from the land by the Assyrians.
I
can hardly stand to continue with this.

Sorry about this
side trip also. I can't promise it won't happen again!
Since that time but one king of
the Davidic family has been crowned at Jerusalem, and He was crowned with
thorns. But the Davidic Covenant, given to David by an oath of the Lord
and confirmed to Mary by the Angel Gabriel, is immutable Ps.89;20-37)see
above; and the Lord will yet
give to that thorn-crowned One "the thorne of his father David" (Lk.1:31-33;
Acts 2:29-32; 15:14-17).
Luke
1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive
in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the
Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33
And
he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there
shall be no end.
Acts
2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely
speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried,
and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 30
Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath
to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would
raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31
He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul
was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 32
This
Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Acts
15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at
the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his
name. 15 And
to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, 16
After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David,
which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will
set it up: 17
That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles,
upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
Both David and Solomon understood
the promise to refer to a literal earthly kingdom (2 Sam.7:18-29); 2 Chr.6:14-16).
2
Samuel 7:18 ¶Then went king David
in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what
is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? 19
And
this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken
also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the
manner of man, O Lord GOD? 20
And
what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant.
21
For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all
these great things, to make thy servant know them. 22
Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither
is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with
our ears. 23
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel,
whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name,
and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people,
which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
24
For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto
thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.
25
And
now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant,
and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.
26
And
let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God
over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before
thee. 27
For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant,
saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in
his heart to pray this prayer unto thee. 28
And
now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast
promised this goodness unto thy servant:
29
Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that
it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken
it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
2 Chronicles 6:14 And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keepest covenant, and shewest mercy unto thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts: 15 Thou which hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him; and spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day. 16 Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.
Now, back to:

The Future Restoration of the Theocratic Kingdom.(ps.89;3-4,20-21,28-37)
Psalms
89:3 I have made a covenant with my
chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, 4
Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations.
Selah.
Psalms 89:20 I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: 21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.
Psalms 89:28 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. 29 His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. 30 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; 31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; 32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. 33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. 34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. 35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. 36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. 37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
[2] The
exposition of the Davidic Covenant by the prophets (Isa.1:15-26; Zech.12:6-8).
Isaiah
1:15 And when ye spread forth your hands,
I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will
not hear: your hands are full of blood. 16
¶Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before
mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17
Learn
to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless,
plead for the widow. 18
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins
be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like
crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If
ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
20
But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the
mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
21 ¶How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. 22 Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water: 23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. 24 Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies: 25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: 26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
Note: Under the future kingdom the ancient method of administering the theocratic government over Israel is to be restored. The kingdom as described by the prophets by the prophets is:
[a] Davidic, to be established under David's heir who is to be born of
a virgin, therefore truly man, but also "Ommanuel" "the mighty God, the
everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace" (Isa.7:13-14; 9:6-7; 11:1; Jer.23:5;
Ezek.34:23; 37:24; Hos.3:4-5).
Isaiah
7:13 And he said, Hear ye now, O house
of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my
God also? 14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall
conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah
9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto
us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his
name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting
Father, The Prince of Peace. 7
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon
the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish
it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal
of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah
11:1 ¶And there shall come forth
a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
Jeremiah
23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the
LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall
reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
Ezekiel
34:23 And I will set up one shepherd
over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed
them, and he shall be their shepherd.
Ezekiel
37:24 And David my servant shall be
king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk
in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.
Hosea
3:4 For the children of Israel shall
abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice,
and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim: 5
Afterward
shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David
their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days
[b] A kingdom heavenly in origin, principle, and authority (Dan.2:34-35,44-45,
Daniel
2:34 Thou sawest till that a stone was
cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of
iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. 35
Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken
to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors;
and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the
stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole
earth.
Daniel
2:44 And in the days of these kings
shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed:
and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in
pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45
Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without
hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver,
and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come
to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof
sure.
but set up on the earth, with Jerusalem
as the capital (Isa.2:2-4; 4:3-5; 24:23; 33:20; 62:1-7; Jer.23:5; 31:38-40;
Joel 3:1,16-17).
Isaiah
2:2 And it shall come to pass in the
last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in
the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all
nations shall flow unto it. 3 And
many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain
of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of
his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth
the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4
And
he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they
shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks:
nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn
war any more
Isaiah
4:3 And it shall come to pass, that
he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called
holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem: 4
When
the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and
shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the
spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning. 5
And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon
her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming
fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.
Isaiah
24:23 Then the moon shall be confounded,
and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion,
and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
Isaiah
33:20 Look upon Zion, the city of our
solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle
that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever
be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.
Isaiah
62:1 ¶For Zion's sake will I not
hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness
thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that
burneth. 2
And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory:
and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall
name.
3
Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal
diadem in the hand of thy God. 4
Thou shalt no more be termed forsaken; neither shall thy land any
more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land
Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.
5
For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and
as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over
thee.
6
¶I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never
hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep
not silence,
7
And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise
in the earth.
Jeremiah
23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the
LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall
reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
Jeremiah
31:38 Behold, the days come, saith the
LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel
unto the gate of the corner. 39
And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill
Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath. 40
And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the
fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward
the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor
thrown down any more for ever.
Joel
3:1 ¶For, behold, in those days,
and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
Joel
3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of
Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth
shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength
of the children of Israel. 17
So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy
mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass
through her any more.
[c] The kingdom is to be established first over regathered, restored, and
converted Israel, and is then to become universal (Ps.2:6-8; 22:1-31; 24:1-10;
Isa.1:2-3; 11:1,10-13; 60:12; Jer.23:5-8; 30:7-11; Ezek.20:33-40; 37:21-25;
Zech.9:10; 14:16-19).
Psalms
2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy
hill of Zion. 7
¶I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my
Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8
Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and
the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
Psalms
22:1 ¶<<To the chief Musician
upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.>> My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of
my roaring? 2
O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night
season, and am not silent. 3
But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. 4
Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5
They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and
were not confounded.
6
But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7
All
they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake
the head, saying, 8
He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him,
seeing he delighted in him. 9
But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when
I was upon my mother's breasts. 10 I
was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
11
¶Be
not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 12
Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13
They
gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart
is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15
My
strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws;
and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me:
they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. 19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. 22 ¶I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. 23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. 24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. 25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. 26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. 27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. 28 For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. 29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. 30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. 31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.
Psalms 24:1 ¶<<A Psalm of David.>> The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. 2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. 3 ¶Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah. 7 ¶Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.
Isaiah
1:2 ¶Hear, O heavens, and give
ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up
children, and they have rebelled against me. 3
The
ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not
know, my people doth not consider.
Isaiah
11:1 ¶And there shall come forth
a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
Isaiah
11:10 ¶And in that day there shall
be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it
shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
Isaiah
11:13 The envy also of Ephraim shall
depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not
envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.
Isaiah
60:12 For the nation and kingdom that
will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.
Jeremiah
23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the
LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall
reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
6
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this
is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 7
Therefore,
behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The
LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of
Egypt; 8
But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house
of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had
driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.
Jeremiah 30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. 8 For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him: 9 But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them. 10 ¶Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid. 11 For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.
Ezekiel 20:33 ¶As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: 34 And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. 35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. 36 Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD. 37 And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:
38 And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. 39 As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols. 40 For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things.
Ezekiel 37:21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: 22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all: 23 Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God. 24 And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. 25 And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.
Zechariah 9:10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.
Zechariah 14:16 ¶And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. 17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. 18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
[d] The moral characteristics of the kingdom are to be righteousness
and peace. The meek, not the proud, will inherit the earth; longevity will
be greatly increaded; the knowledge of the Lord will be universal; beast-ferosity
will be removed; absolute equity qill be enforced; and open sin will be
visited with instant judgment; whereas the enormous majority of earth's
inhabitants will be saved (Ps.2:9; Isa.11:4,6-9; 65:20; Zech.14:16-21.
Isaiah
11:4 But with righteousness shall he
judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and
he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath
of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Isaiah
11:6 The wolf also shall dwell with
the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and
the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead
them. 7
And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together:
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8
And
the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child
shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. 9
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth
shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
Isaiah 65:20 There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.
The N.T. (Rev.20:1-5) adds a detail
of immence significance---the removal of Satan from the scene.
Revelation
20:1 ¶And I saw an angel come down
from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in
his hand. 2
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and
Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3
And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon
him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years
should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
4
And
I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them:
and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus,
and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither
his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their
hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5
But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were
finished. This is the first resurrection.
It is impossible to conceive to
what heights of spiritual, intellectisl, and physical perfection humanity
will attain in this, its coming age of rightousness and peace (Ps.72:1-10;Isa.11:4-9).

72:1 ¶<<A Psalm for Solomon.>>
Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's

The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings

Isaiah 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. 5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. 6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
[e] The kingdom is to be established by power, not persuasion, and is to
follow divine judgment upon the Gentile world powers (Ps.2:4-9; Isa.9:7;
Dan.2:35,44-45; 7:26-27; Zech.14:1-19). see Zech.6:11.

connected with the advent of the Lord, yet future (Dt.30:3-5; Ps.2:1-9;

And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed,

above thy fathers.
Psalms 2:1 ¶Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. 6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 ¶I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

The
promise of the kingdom to David and his seed, and described in the prophets
(2 Sam.7:8-17, and notes; Zech.12:8) see
above, enters the N.T. absolutely
unchanged (Lk.1:31-33).
Luke
1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive
in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32

of a virgin (Mt.1:18-25; cp.Isa.7:14).
Matthew
1:18 ¶Now the birth of Jesus Christ
was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before
they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19
Then
Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick
example, was minded to put her away privily. 20
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared
unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take
unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy
Ghost. 21
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for
he shall save his people from their sins. 22
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the
Lord by the prophet, saying, 23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and
they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with
us. 24
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden
him, and took unto him his wife: 25
And
knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called
his name JESUS.
cp. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew

From
that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, [*#2]
Repent:
for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Ephesians 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: 7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

and afterward officially (Mt.21:42-43),
and the King, crowned with thorns, was crucified.
Matthew
21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye
never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the
same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it
is marvellous in our eyes? 43
Therefore say I unto you, [*]
The
kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing
forth the fruits thereof.
[*] Matthew here uses the expression "kingdom of God" referring to a sphere of genuine faith in God, in contrast with his usual expression "kingdom of heaven." The kingdom of God is declared to be "taken from you, i.e. taken from thr scribes and Pharisees represented in the parable of the householder )Mt.13-46) as the wicked farmers. and given to a nation, i.e. any people who will bring forth the fruits of salvation. This passage teaches that unbelieving scribe and Pharsees would not be saved, because of their rejection of the Son. Others who will manifest the fruits of salvation take their place. Neither in the present age nor in the future millenium is the kingdom of God the exclusive possession of either Israel or the Gentiles.

to them it is not given.

Now, Kingdom
(N.T.), Summary: [3]
to be fulfilled in the interval
between His rejection and His return in glory (Mt.13:1-50)
In the Greek there is a play upon
words in this statement: "Thou art Peter(Petros, a stone), and uponthis
rock (petra, a massive rock) I will build my church. It is upon Christ
Himself that the Church is built. See what the Apostle Peter writes (1
Peter 2:4-8); compare also Paul's statememt (1 Cor.3:11).

Peter 2:4 ¶To whom coming, as unto

5
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood,
to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6
Wherefore
also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner
stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7
Unto you therefore which believe he is precious:
but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed,
the same is made the head of the corner, 8
And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble
at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

ae?r
ah-ayr'
From ?????? ae?mi (to breathe unconsciously,
that is, respire; by analogy to blow); “air” (as naturally circumambient):
- air.
The word translated air in verse 17 obviously has nothing to do with the sky as you and I are lead to believe!
Scofield interpreters, and my fellow Christians, are you paying attention! (air), in verse 17 isn't what you think it is!
When Christ returns we are all changed back into our spiritual bodies.
The flesh age is over, done, kaput!
We are no longer in this dimension!
And air ain't air, at least as you're thinking of it.
Note: It's time for a little side journey into Biblical knowledge land.
What happens to our bodies at the last trump? Would you like to know a secret or mystery? The apostle Paul is about to show us one. In 1 Cor. 15 (read the entire chapter) Paul explains that you have two bodies, a flesh body and a spiritual body. 1 Cor. 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. There is a natural (flesh) body, and there is a spiritual body. He's talking about you and me. When our flesh body dies we are changed back into our spiritual body and go to be with the Lord. Absent from the body, present with the Lord. This is basic Christianity 101. Now for the mystery! Paul is speaking... Cor. 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; Pay close attention here! This is a mystery (Gk.= musterion, secret or mystery) to most people. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, Here's how Dr. Moffat translates it: 1 Cor. 15:51 Here is a secret truth for you: not all of us are to die, but all of us are to be changed - Hold that thought for a moment... "not all of us are going to die, but all of us are to be changed".Question - Changed to what? Answer - To our spiritual bodies! When and how are we going to be changed? We return to the King's James translation: [52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. What happens at the last trump, which is the seventh and final trump, since there are only seven? Jesus Christ returns and we "who are alive and remain" are INSTANTLY, in the twinkling of an eye, changed from our flesh body to our spiritual body. Not after Christ has been here awhile, but instantly at the sound of the trump!
Now, we learned in study #1452 that the son of perdition, Satan, the spurious messiah, comes FIRST, at the six trump. Do you know what that means? You guessed it! If you are still in the flesh, if you still bleed when pricked with a pin, then Jesus Christ hasn't returned. Now you know the secret! Never forget it! You are still in the flesh when Satan shows up here on earth, claiming to be Christ,i.e. during the tribulation but are changed instantly into your spirit body the moment Christ really returns! I repeat, If you still bleed when pricked with a pin you are still in the flesh, meaning, the real Jesus Christ still hasn't returned.
Don't
let Christ return and find you worshipping Satan, while he sits in the
church claiming he is Christ, because you never, in your flesh and blood
life, cared enough to learn how to tell the difference between what is
holy and what is profane! Now you know!
Now, back to Kingdom
(N.T.), Summary: [6]
[6] Upon
His return the King will restore the Davidic monarchy in His own Person,
regather dispersed Israel, establish His power over all the earth, and
rrign 1000 years (Mt.24:27-30; Acts 15:14-17; Rev. 20:1-10).
Matthew
24:27 For as the lightning cometh out
of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of
the Son of man be. 28
For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
29
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened,
and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven,
and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30
And
then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall
all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming
in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Acts 15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. 15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, 16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: 17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
Revelation 20:1 ¶And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. 7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The Davidic kingdom to be restored by Christ: its character and extent
Isaiah
11:1 ¶And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse,
and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
2
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge
and of the fear of the LORD;
3
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and
he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the
hearing of his ears:
4
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity
for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of
his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
5
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the
girdle of his reins.
Isaiah
11:6 The wolf also shall dwell with
the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and
the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead
them.
7
And
the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together:
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8
And
the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child
shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.
9
They
shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for
the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD,
as the waters cover the sea.
10
¶And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand
for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest
shall be glorious.
11
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand
again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall
be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush,
and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of
the sea.
12
And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts
of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners
of the earth.
13
The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall
be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.
14
But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west;
they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon
Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.
15
And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and
with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall
smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
16
And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall
be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came
up out of the land of Egypt.
Thanksgiving in the kingdom
Isaiah
12:1 ¶And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise
thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou
comfortedst me.
2
Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD
JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
3
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
4
¶And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name,
declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.
5
Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in
all the earth.
6
Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of
Israel in the midst of thee.
New heavens and new earth
Isaiah
65:17 ¶For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and
the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
18
But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold,
I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.
19
And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of
weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.
20
There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath
not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but
the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
21
And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards,
and eat the fruit of them.
22
They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another
eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect
shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
23
They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are
the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.
24
And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while
they are yet speaking, I will hear.

feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and
dust shall be the serpent's meat. They
