Genesis Chapter 46

"Jacob's Removal to Egypt, the Sons Posterity."
Caution to students of God;s Word - Please remember two things when using our American Wisdom Series studies:
#1. Our commentary is not God's Word. It is only our interpretation or understanding of "His Word" and even though we try our best to be accurate we may or may not be correct. #2. The King James translation, or any other translation, of the original Hebrew text has some words which were given different translations at different places probably because of the interpreters preconceived ideas of what they think God meant to say. For example: According to the notes in the "Drake's Annotated Reference Bible" the Hebrew word hayah in the KJV is Trans. (became) 67 times, (becamest or came to pass) 505 times, (become) 66 times, and (come to pass) 131 times, but for some reason in Genesis 1:2 it is translated (was)! That sure changes the way a person perceives the original creation of the earth, doesn't it?  Gen. 1:2 And the earth was (became) without form, ... Having said that, let us continue with our "studies". These studies contain knowledge, we believe, you must have to fully and accurately unlock and understand the Word of God.
May the Holy Spirit be your only guiding light. Sincerely, John Rhine

Revelation 2:17  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

John 15:26
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

John 16:13-14
[13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. [14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Without the leading by the Holy Spirit, there is no understanding of the truths, for all the truth of the Scriptures are revealed to us by God's Spirit.

Now here is our revised study of: Christopherson's Genesis 46.

Genesis Chapter 46

"Jacob's Removal to Egypt, the Sons Posterity."

Genesis 46:1 "And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac."

Remember that "Beer-sheba" means the the "well of the oath", or "the well of the seven". This is the same well that Isaac made his sacrifices. This is also the same well where Hagar and Ishmael were waiting for death, and God opened their eyes to see the well close by, and then God made a covenant with Hagar, and promised her that Ishmael would live and become the father of nations. We know those nations today as the Arab nations.

Genesis 46:2 "And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, "Jacob, Jacob." And he said, "Here am I."

Genesis 46:3 "And He said, "I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:"

Jacob's [Israel's] family will grow into a mighty nation in Egypt, for God told Abraham that his seed would go to Egypt for four generations, and come out far richer then they went in.

American Wisdom Series Editor's Note: And then go on to become the Christian nations, mostly in Europe and the Americas, as we know them in this 21st. century.

The northern kingdom, "House of Israel", along with many from the southern kingdom, "House of Judah" were taken by Assyria, in 721 BC well over eight hundred thousand Israelite men  2 Samuel 24:1 - 9 and their families from ten different tribes (2 Kings 17, 18, and 19.)  In 2 Kings 19:32-34 we learn that only Jerusalem was spared. Then, from the southern kingdom, "House of Judah" one hundred and thirty five years later, in 586 B.C,,  Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon carried more than one half million Israelite men 2 Samuel 24:1 - 9 and their families from the other two tribes, of Benjamin and Judah (the Jews), away to Babylon. 2 Kings 25:1 - 21.

(All total approximately 1,300,000 men plus their wives and children were carried away)

Live Link to-  "Israel's Lost Tribes"

Remember as you read this study, or any place in the Bible;

#1. When the talk is about the ancient "House of Israel", it is the ten tribes of Israelites who made up that northern kingdom house or nation and have since their dispersement by Assyria in 745-721 B.C., migrated on to the west and have become the Christian nations of our 21st. century.

#2. When the talk is about the ancient "House of Judah", it is the two tribes of Israelites, Judah and Benjamin, who made up that southern kingdom house or nation and have since, after mixing with the Kenites, i.e. descendants of Cain during their Babylonian captivity in 586 B.C., become the Jewish peoples of our 21st. century, now calling themselves, not Israelites but Israelis, many of whom in 1948 moved back to the middle east and with the help of England organized into the new country called Israel today, which was then recognized by the United States and three days later Russia,

Genesis 46:4 "I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes."

What this means is that Joseph will close Jacob's eyes in peace, meaning in his death. Jacob will die there, yet Joseph will also bring his bones out of Egypt.

Genesis 46:5 "And Jacob rose up from Beer-sheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him."

Genesis 46:6 "And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:"

Genesis 46:7 "His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt."

In verses eight through twenty seven it names the full house of Israel that went down into Egypt. There are sixty six people that went together with Jacob, along with the rest of the servants, herdsmen, and wives. Of these there are four already in Egypt, that is Joseph, his wife and his two sons, Manasseh, and Ephraim. Sixty six going down, and four there, making a total of seventy Israelites.

Notice that the people were saved as a family unit, and the family units stayed together. My fellow Christian, your family is a sacred thing. It is joined under God, and when in God, God will protect it, and it grows in God. It is a flesh and blood unit, and as such problems do enter into it, however we can call on the Lord to provide and to protect all of our family.

Genesis 46:8 "And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn."

Genesis 46:9 "And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi."

Genesis 46:10 "And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman."

Genesis 46:11 "And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari."

Genesis 46:12 "And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onon, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zarah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul."

Genesis 46:13 "And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel."

Genesis 46:14 "These be the sons of Heah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padan-aram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three."

Genesis 46:15 "And these were the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli."

Genesis 46:16 "And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, ad Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel."

Genesis 46:17 "These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls."

Genesis 46:18 "the sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin."

Genesis 46:19 "And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On bare unto him."

Genesis 46:21 "And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard."

Genesis 46:22 "These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen."

Genesis 46:23 "Ant the sons of Dan; Hushim."

Genesis 46:24 "And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem."

Genesis 46:25 "These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven."

Genesis 46:26 "And all the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, (which came out of his loins), besides Jacob's sons wives, all the souls were three score and six"

Genesis 46:27 "And the sons of Joseph, which were born to him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were three score and ten."

Many Bible teachers think that Joseph's wife was an Egyptian, however she is in this count as an Israelite. She was a daughter of one of the shepherd kings, or rulers, at On. The Shepherd kings conquered Egypt, they were called the Hyksos. They ruled it for a period of time, and many scholars believed that the king that was ruling over Egypt while Joseph was here was a Shepherd king [Pharaoh]. That is why they believed that the Pharaoh was so concerned about both Joseph and Jacob, and all the family traveling with the wagons.

Genesis 46:28 And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen."

Goshen was the land east of Memphis, suitable for grazing, and it was called the "field of Zoan". Zoan, or Tanis mentioned in the Inscriptions as containing non-Egyptian inhabitants and Semites."

Genesis 46:29 "And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while."

It has been a long while that Joseph had not seen his father, and his father even thought Joseph to be dead. And now there is an exciting time in this family reunion. Joseph was a lad of seventeen when he left, and was sold by his brothers, and now he is a middle age man, with two sons. Joseph is the firstborn by Rachel, who was barren for many years, and had Joseph later in life.

Genesis 46:30 "And Israel said unto Joseph, "Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive."

Genesis 46:31 "And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, "I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, "My Brethren, and my father's house which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;"

Joseph is giving his brothers the words to say when they enter in before the Pharaoh.

Genesis 46:32 "And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have."

Genesis 46:33 "And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, "What is your occupation?"

Genesis 46:34 "That ye shall say, "thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers:" that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians."

It is felt by many scholars that this Pharaoh is "Apepi", one of the Hyksos [shepherd] kings. The advise that Joseph is giving will help get to the heart of Apepi, for he was once one of the shepherd people, and he knows how important it is to have good pasture land. By locating the Israelites in the land of Goshen, would keep them separate from the population of the Egyptians, for the two races were very prejudice to one another, and this was not a class prejudice because the division was over the customs of each race.

What Joseph then is saying is that sheep are an abomination to the Egyptians, and as such, they will set you apart and leave you alone. This is not a class separation but a race separation. It gets to the heart of the matter, the separation between the Shepherd kings, and the Egyptians.

To study the Bible is the noblest of all pursuits; to understand it, the highest of all goals.  We pray that with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you accomplish both.
